Discontinued Lamp or Ballast? How to Replace It Without Replacing the Fixture

Manufacturers phase out lamps and control gear all the time, especially as lighting moves from fluorescent, halogen and HID to LED. For a facility or maintenance team, that often shows up as a simple problem: a lamp or ballast fails, and the exact replacement is no longer on the shelf.

Replacing every fixture is expensive and disruptive. In many cases it isn't necessary. Here's how we approach it.

1. Identify exactly what you have

Before searching, collect the details from the old part:

• Lamps: brand, full model code, wattage, base or cap type (for example G13, GU10, E27, G24d, Fc2), colour temperature and, for HID lamps, the lamp type (metal halide, high-pressure sodium).
• Ballasts and drivers: brand, model code, lamp type and wattage it drives, input voltage and, for LED drivers, output current or voltage.
• A photo of the label and of the fitting itself. This alone often solves the search.

2. Look for genuine remaining stock

A product that is discontinued in one country is often still in stock elsewhere, with distributors or stockists who ordered it before production stopped. 3. Consider a compatible alternative

If genuine stock has run out, the next step is an equivalent from another brand with the same base, electrical characteristics and dimensions. For ballasts, this means matching the lamp type and wattage exactly. Mismatched control gear can shorten lamp life or cause failures.

4. Plan ahead for the rest of the site

If one fitting type is affected, others of the same age will follow. Once you've found a source, it's worth buying spares for the remaining fixtures, or planning a phased LED retrofit with LED drivers and compatible lamps.
